Wear a Color for Cancer Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Feb. 4, is World Cancer Day. The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) established this day to bring awareness to all the different types of cancer out there. I think we all know that breast cancer is symbolized by pink, but there is a color designated to most other cancers as well. I’d like to encourage you to wear one of the colors below in honor of someone you know who faced or is facing cancer.

From the World Cancer Day web site:
On the 4th of February, 2011 the UICC and its partner organisations will run campaigns all over the world to raise awareness for a disease that causes millions of deaths every year, many of which could have been prevented.

More than ever before there is a need for a concerted and coordinated fight against cancer, and we believe that World Cancer Day can play its part by providing an even bigger platform for your cancer messages.

These sites are full of information about cancer, the UICC's mission, and a declaration you can sign to show your support during a United Nations summit this September.

I’ll be wearing lime green in honor of my dad, dark blue in honor of my father-in-law, and gold (maybe earrings?) in honor of my cousin Carly (read her story here). Unfortunately, I could probably wear a multi-colored shirt in honor of all the people I know who’ve battled cancer in one form or another. Tomorrow is an important day to wear cancer in honor of my dad, too – he’ll be having a biopsy on a suspicious spot on his arm that his doctor caught (after he told us he was in remission) on his PET scan.

Pink: Breast Cancer
Light Blue: Prostate Cancer
Teal: Ovarian/Uterine Cancer
Gold: Childhood Cancers
Grey: Brain Cancer
Green: Kidney Cancer
Dark Blue: Colon Cancer
Yellow: Liver Cancer
Purple: Pancreatic Cancer
Black: Melanoma (Skin cancer)
Orange: Leukemia
Periwinkle: Stomach Cancer
Lime Green: Lymphoma
White: Lung Cancer
Lavender: General cancer awareness

  1. I'll wear Lime Green for your Dad in hopes that his biopsy comes out clean.

Praying for him and his healing.
